The Sweet Poteat Story

I’ve always been a treat lover! In 2009 I was newly married and hoping to make a batch of delicious chocolate chip cookies for my new husband and extended family. I found an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe from my step father and began. I was so inexperienced with baking that I thought I could just omit the oatmeal from my cookies. As you can imagine, the cookies spread into one giant flat crisp cookie and tears were shed. We skipped out on the family get together that night to avoid embarrassment. From that moment on I was determined to learn to bake. I tried recipe after recipe and asked help from anyone that would teach me. I put countless hours into learning and had more flops than I care to admit. But I’m happy to say I can bake a delicious chocolate chip cookie! Among many other treats. As a baker, my goal is to make treats that are both delicious and beautiful. My favorite part of being a baker is to see a smile of enjoyment on my clients faces and have them come back for more!

A little about me. Baking is a clear passion of mine. But I also have a passion for studying scripture and religion. I love to read. Especially Harry Potter and regency era romance books. I love to sing. And watch movies. I am a creator at heart. And a bit of an artist. But most of all, I love my family. My husband and I are blessed with four beautiful children! They are the light of our lives.

I would like to give a BIG thanks to eight people who have been a major part of my baking journey. First, to  Abby Kunz, for inspiring me to bake, teaching me her knowledge, giving me recipes and providing me with delicious treats for inspiration. Second, to Keturah Gordan for baking with me side by side and showing me specific baking skills. Third, to my step father Stuart Shumway for providing me with delicious cookies as a kid and holding my hand through pie making. I couldn’t have learned without you! Fourth, to my mother Becky Rosado for making Christmas truffles that inspired the truffles I bake today. Fifth, to Wendy Jaskowick for sharing recipes with me, giving me honest feedback, and for participating in taste test bake offs to find the best recipes. Sixth, to Stacy Goulding for pushing me to start a business in the first place and believing that I could. Seventh, to my husband Skyler Poteat for buying me my first Kitchen Aid that changed the way I baked! And for being patient and holding down the fort as I put hours and hours into improving my skill. And eighth and most importantly, to God, for giving me the ability to learn, for inspiring me in new ways, lifting me when I was discouraged and for allowing me to grow and develop my skill. And of course THANK YOU to all the people who tested my treats and gave feedback along the way!
